WEBDIGITALWEBSITE TECHNICAL AUDIT

Website technical audit with a clear improvement plan.

A website technical audit helps identify slow loading, errors and broken features. We review WordPress, plugins, technical SEO, language versions, performance and security settings within an agreed scope.

You receive a report explaining the findings, their impact and the recommended order of work. We agree on the audit cost before starting and quote any fixes separately.

WHEN AN AUDIT HELPS
After a website launch Before major changes When changing developers When the cause is unclear
026 AUDIT AREAS

Website technical audit: from WordPress to checkout.

A page can load normally while its enquiry form, language switcher or checkout fails. We agree on the important visitor journeys and review both the website settings and the results of those actions.

01
WordPress, plugins and licences Versions and compatibility

We review WordPress, theme and plugin versions, compatibility and licence status. We identify outdated components and restrictions on updates.

02
Technical SEO and site structure Indexing settings

We review headings, metadata, canonical tags, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, 404 errors and internal links.

03
Languages and translations Language version behaviour

We review language switching, links, URLs and hreflang, along with the settings of WPML, TranslatePress or the multilingual tool in use.

04
Features and WooCommerce Key customer journeys

We test forms, buttons, email delivery, the basket and checkout. Payment and delivery tests are performed only in an agreed test mode.

05
Performance, hosting and security Technical environment

We assess caching, images, PHP versions, backups, access permissions and updates.

06
Analytics and tracking Measurement checks

We check the GA4 and Google Search Console setup and agreed tracking events, where access to the relevant accounts is provided.

AUDIT RESULT

Findings organised by priority.

The report separates operational issues, recommended improvements and features that can be retained.

Fix first Issues that disrupt the website or pose a material risk.

Recommended improvements Tasks to improve performance, technical SEO or usability.

Keep as it is Reviewed features that do not require changes.

We agree on the audit scope before starting. A WooCommerce store, a multilingual site and a simple business website require different test scenarios. Account access and testing conditions are agreed separately.

03AUDIT AND FOLLOW-UP WORK

Start with the audit. Agree on fixes separately.

A website technical audit is a standalone service. You can share the report with your developer or ask WebDigital for a separate quote to resolve the findings. Ordering an audit does not commit you to further work.

04WHEN TO REQUEST AN AUDIT

Review your existing website before major changes.

A website technical audit helps you make an informed decision about future work or investigate a problem with an unclear cause. These are six common situations.

01
AFTER DEVELOPMENT
A newly built website

Review key features, mobile behaviour and technical settings before accepting the project or after launch.

02
BEFORE A REDESIGN
Planning a website redesign

Find out whether targeted fixes are sufficient and which parts can be retained.

03
CHANGING DEVELOPERS
Handing the site to another team

Document the system, plugins, licences and limitations relevant to the handover.

04
AN ESTABLISHED WEBSITE
Your website has been running for years

Review outdated components, unused plugins, broken links and backup availability.

05
AN UNCLEAR CAUSE
A recurring error

Investigate slow loading, form failures, language issues or WooCommerce problems.

06
FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS
You need to prioritise work

Assess the current condition and recommended changes so you can budget for specific tasks.

05HOW THE AUDIT WORKS

Website technical audit in 4 stages.

02

Carry out the audit

Review the agreed areas and document findings with explanations.

03

Prepare the report

Organise findings by impact and recommended order of work.

04

Discuss next steps

Explain the results. You can commission fixes separately or share the report with your developer.

10 questions
How does a website technical audit differ from an SEO audit?

An SEO audit focuses on search visibility: indexing, site structure, content and search data. A website technical audit also reviews WordPress, plugins, licences, permissions, backups and key features. There is some overlap, so we clarify whether you need technical diagnostics, an in-depth SEO review or both before agreeing on the scope.

Do you audit websites built by other developers?

Yes. We can review a WordPress site built by another team after launch, before a handover or before a redesign. We assess the existing implementation and features. If part of the system or an account is unavailable, we explain what could not be checked and how that limits the findings.

Can you audit a WooCommerce store?

Yes. The scope can include product pages, the basket, checkout, payments, delivery options and order emails. We agree on the test environment and data in advance. Live payments, order cancellations or customer data changes require separate agreement.

Do you check paid plugin licences?

We review plugin versions, licence status and update access where the provided permissions allow it. Some licences belong to a previous developer or another account. We document those limitations and possible options. New licences are not automatically included in the audit price.

Can you fix the issues after the audit?

We can provide a separate quote for the agreed fixes, stating scope, cost and timing. Restrictions imposed by external platforms, licences or custom code are reviewed before implementation. The audit price does not include fixing every possible issue.

Will the audit mean I need a new website?

Not necessarily. If the WordPress setup is maintainable and core features work, targeted fixes may be enough. A rebuild may be appropriate when the system is unsupported, significantly restricted or unsuitable for the required changes. We explain the recommendation using the audit findings.

Is the scope the same for every website?

No. A simple business website requires different checks from a multilingual WooCommerce store with external integrations. We agree which pages, features and systems will be reviewed. The quote also states limitations and excluded work so you know what to expect from the report.

How much does a website technical audit cost, and how long does it take?

Cost and timing depend on the number of pages, features, languages and integrations. We review the website address and clarify the purpose before quoting. You receive a scope and price to approve. If further investigation is needed, we discuss it before proceeding. The audit is not unlimited testing of every connected system.

What access do you need?

We can initially review public pages without an account. WordPress settings require a separate user account with permissions appropriate to the task. Hosting, licence and analytics access is requested only when relevant to the scope. We agree on a secure handover method separately. Do not put passwords in the public chat or enquiry description.

Can the website stay online during the audit?

Reviewing public pages and settings usually does not require downtime. Functional tests may create test enquiries or orders, so these are agreed in advance. If a test could affect visitors, we use a staging site or agree on a suitable time. Updates and fixes are not performed as part of the audit without separate agreement.

Website technical audit: put the report to work

From a finding to a verified fix

A useful finding includes where the issue occurs and the conditions needed to reproduce it. “The form does not work” is not enough for a developer. Specify the page, action, expected outcome and what happened during the check. This makes it easier to reproduce the issue and choose a suitable fix.

For multilingual issues, record the versions tested. A working Latvian form does not confirm that recipients and links are correct in English and Russian. Equally, one failed check does not establish that the entire website needs rebuilding. Investigate the particular limitation first.

Separate the observation from its possible cause in the developer’s task. Where account access or server information is unavailable, record that limitation. An assumption should not be presented as a confirmed diagnosis. A complex integration may require a separately agreed investigation before the cause can be established.

Prioritise tasks by their impact on visitors and the business. A failed enquiry or purchase usually deserves attention before a minor visual improvement. Agree who will handle the task, what remains unknown and how the result will be verified. A website technical audit helps establish that order of work.

After a fix, repeat the original action and check the related process. For a form, also verify receipt of the message. For a store, test the subsequent order steps in the agreed test mode. The disappearance of an error message alone does not confirm that the whole process works.

Keep the report alongside the completed task list. It helps the next developer understand what was checked, what changed and what remained outside the scope. A website technical audit describes conditions at a particular time; relevant features should be retested after significant changes.
